“Head of Future Services International, Yaneek Page, is charging that the country’s rules governing advertising by lawyers are denying many Jamaicans access to legal services.

The General Legal Council puts limits on how lawyers can advertise and bars them from advertising their practices in the fields of personal injury or fatal accidents, except in a limited form. Among the stipulations in relation to personal injury, is that the advertisement not contain any words implying that the attorney is a specialist, expert or leader in any field of practice.  They also prohibit a lawyer’s advertisement from containing any testimonials or endorsements concerning the professional in question. Page argues that the rules are outdated and leave people ignorant of the services offered by various lawyers. She is also concerned about the wording of clauses which say the advertisement must not be vulgar or sensational. Page says she will be writing to the justice ministry as she seeks to lobby the government to have the rules changed in relation to the advertising of legal services.”
